New York Community Trust Awards $5 Million in Second-Quarter Grants
The New York Community Trust has announced seventy-one grants totaling $5 million to nonprofit organizations working in areas ranging from the arts, education, and the environment to health and human services and youth engagement.
Nine organizations received grants totaling $320,000 in support of their efforts to give youth in or at risk of joining gangs better options, to develop leaders, and to make public housing safer; grantees include the
New York City Housing Authority
($110,000) and the Community Resource Exchange ($100,000). Other grants included $200,000 to child- and youth-serving agency Graham Windham to help four foster care agencies implement a child abuse prevention model; $150,000 to the New York State Gas Drilling Protection Project for efforts to minimize damage caused by hydraulic fracturing; and $150,000 to the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York in support of a career exploration program for girls from low-performing middle schools in the Bronx.
The trust also awarded $100,000 to the Natural Resources Defense Council to establish a wholesale farmers' market in the Hunt Points Food Distribution Center in the Bronx; $100,000 to HealthCare Chaplaincy to determine whether including chaplains on hospital discharge planning teams reduces re-admission of chronically ill elders; and $70,000 to 651 ARTS to publicize African-American dance, theater, and literary performances marking the fiftieth anniversary of the civil rights movement.
