American Revolution Center Receives $40 Million Challenge Grant to Build Museum
The Philadelphia-based American Revolution Center has announced a $40 million challenge grant from local philanthropist H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest in support of the Museum of the American Revolution.
The grant boosts to $70 million the amount pledged toward the center's $150 million campaign goal for construction of the museum. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects LLP, the museum will be located on the eastern end of Independence National Historical Park and will house the original artifacts, manuscripts, rare books, and artworks owned by the American Revolution Center. The museum aims to tell the full story of the American Revolution while exploring its ongoing legacy, providing context for the many regional and national museums that present key aspects of the country's founding era.
"The American Revolution secured our independence and led to the creation of this great nation," said Lenfest. "Yet two centuries have passed and there is still no national museum that tells the entire story of this remarkable period. I am offering this challenge grant because now is the time to establish the Museum of the American Revolution and ensure that the spirit of the American Revolution is carried forward for generations to come."
