GE Foundation Awards $2.3 Million to National Medical Fellowships for Community Service Program

GE Foundation Awards $2.3 Million to National Medical Fellowships for Community Service Program

The GE Foundation has announced a two-year, $2.3 million grant to National Medical Fellowships to launch a program that will provide prospective healthcare professionals with the opportunity to experience primary care practice in community health centers nationwide.

Building on GE's $50 million commitment to increase access to health care through its Developing Health initiative, the GE-NMF Primary Care Leadership Program aims to draw future health professionals into primary care and build the capacity of community health centers. In its inaugural year, thirty-eight PCLP scholars have been assigned to community health centers in areas with a shortage of general practitioners in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Nashville, and Jackson, Mississippi.

All scholars, who were accepted into the program after being ranked by a faculty and regional advisory board and NMF's National Advisory Committee, will receive leadership development, mentoring, and networking opportunities with NMF alumni while completing two hundred service-learning hours.

"Community health centers serve populations that are forgotten and left behind by other healthcare providers," said NMF board member H. Jack Geiger. "These students will receive a unique experience not afforded to their peers. They will have the chance to dramatically change the lives of those in the local community by changing the way care is organized and delivered to patients."
