New Partnership Announced to Assist Homeless Vets in New York City

New Partnership Announced to Assist Homeless Vets in New York City

The New York City-based Robin Hood Foundation has announced a partnership with the White House and New York City to help returning veterans find jobs and transition back to civilian life.

According to Crain's New York Business, Robin Hood will provide $600,000 for a new Workforce 1 Veterans Career Center in the city that works with existing career centers and businesses to offer job placement services to recently returned veterans. Since launching its Veterans Advisory Board last year, the foundation has awarded some $4.7 million through its Veterans Fund to more than seventeen organizations working to provide essential services to veterans.

The new partnership is a response to First Lady Michelle Obama's and vice presidential wife Jill Biden's Joining Forces Initiative, which seeks to mobilize "all sectors of society to give our service members and their families the opportunity and support they have earned." Studies have found that veterans were among the hardest hit by the economic downturn. Today, 20 percent of homeless adults in New York City are veterans and two-thirds of working veterans lose their job within a year of reentry into the workforce.

"Robin Hood looks forward to its new collaborative effort with the White House and to continuing our important work with the Bloomberg administration," said Robin Hood executive director David Saltzman. "With unemployment for our youngest veterans more than three times the national average, it's more important than ever that we find real-world solutions to the challenges facing our veterans and their families."
