Community Foundation Update (5/05/12) Maryland

The Columbia Foundation has announced the election of Edward J. Berman, Tom Coale, Nuala Duffy, Neil Gordon, Marcia L. Leonard, Joseph V. Murray, Sr., and Lynne C. Schaefer to its board.

Michigan

The Midland Area Community Foundation has named Sharon Mortensen as its new president and CEO.

Nebraska

The Grand Island Community Foundation, in partnership with the Principal Financial Group and Tom Dinsdale Automotive, is hosting a presentation for area nonprofits by Michael Daigneault of BoardSource on May 9, the Grand Island Independent reports. It is the final session of "What Makes Great Nonprofits Great," a nonprofit workshop series that the foundation launched in June 2011.

New York

The Northern New York Community Foundation is seeking proposals for up to $200,000 in funding dedicated to supporting child and youth development in Lewis County over the next two years, the Watertown Daily Times reports. In particular, the foundation seeks proposals that include a focus on broadening awareness of educational and career opportunities, positive mentorship, knowledge enhancement, helping youth who may "fall between the cracks," promotion of self-confidence and self-esteem, and a collaborative, multi-agency approach. To help fund the new program, the foundation is using a $100,000 matching grant from the Dyson Foundation. The deadline for submissions is August 1.

North Carolina

The Asheville-based Community Foundation of Western North Carolina has appointed Philip Belcher as its vice president of programs. For the past twelve years, Belcher has served as president of the Mary Black Foundation in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

Utah

The Community Foundation of Utah in Salt Lake City has awarded grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 to twenty organizations working to strengthen their communities, support families and children, or protect the state's wildlife and environmental resources through specific programs or projects, Utah Pulse reports. Awarded through the Utah Fund, the grants are part of the foundation's inaugural $10,000 Social Enterprise grant and include a $5,000 match from GE Financial Services. Recipients include New Frontiers for Families, the Cancer Wellness House, Hawkwatch International, and the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake.
