Niagara University Receives $2 Million From John R. Oishei Foundation for Science Center
Niagara University in upstate New York has announced a $2 million grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation to support construction of the B. Thomas Golisano Center for Integrated Sciences.
Funds for construction of the center were raised through an $80 million capital campaign, "The Promise of Niagara...The Next 150 Years." Launched in 2007, the campaign struggled during the recession, though it finally reached and surpassed its goal this week, the Buffalo News reports. All told, the campaign received donations from fifteen thousand donors, including thirteen gifts of $1 million or more.
The $28 million, state-of-the-art facility will support integrated cutting-edge collaborations in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, and physics. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2013, the facility is named for Thomas Golisano, the founder of payroll processor Paychex, who pledged $10 million to help underwrite the project.
"We are tremendously thankful to Robert Gioia and the Oishei Foundation for this generous grant," said Niagara University president Joseph L. Levesque. "It is an honor to receive this grant and to have the work that we do supported by such an influential and community-minded foundation."
