California Endowment Creates $1 Million Fund for School Discipline Reform
The California Endowment has announced the creation of a $1 million fund to support proven approaches to school discipline that prevent misconduct, keep students in school, and improve school safety.
Through its Health Happens in Schools initiative, the endowment will fund the creation of a Web site featuring research which shows that teaching positive behavior at a young age and addressing the underlying causes of misconduct produces better educational outcomes and safer environments than suspending students. The site also will provide advice and guidance for school leaders; strategies for involving teachers, students, and parents in shaping discipline policies; and examples of California schools and districts that have successfully adopted positive school discipline, as well as step-by-step toolkits for implementing comprehensive discipline reform. Starting this fall school districts in the state will be able to apply for training, grants, and other support designed to help them transform their approaches to school discipline.
"An increasing number of school leaders now understand that harsh, unforgiving approaches are not helping students succeed," said California Endowment president and CEO Robert K. Ross. "These school leaders are committed to changing their approaches, and in these difficult fiscal times, additional resources can help to speed adoption of new strategies and make Health Happen in Schools."
