Walmart Announces New Programs to Fight Hunger

Walmart Announces New Programs to Fight Hunger

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, in partnership with four of the nation's largest food companies — General Mills, ConAgra, Kraft, and the Kellogg Company — have announced a series of new programs to fight hunger in communities nationwide this spring.

Donations to foodbanks tend to decline during the spring months. With that in mind, Walmart will launch a Facebook campaign that enables Facebook users to vote for one of two hundred communities hit hard by unemployment to receive $1 million for hunger relief programs. Twenty other communities will receive $50,000 each.

In addition, participating Walmart suppliers will donate a total of more than forty-two million meals to Feeding America foodbanks and Action for Healthy Kids, while Walmart will encourage its customers to purchase products from suppliers helping to provide meals to families in need.

"Hunger is a defining issue for America as millions struggle to put food on the table every day," said Jack Sinclair, executive vice president of Walmart's U.S. grocery business. "Helping fight hunger is something our associates, customers, and supplier partners believe in and together we can help make a positive impact on this issue. Simply by going into a Walmart store or going online, every consumer in America has the opportunity to join this effort."
