Corning-Painted Post School District Receives $5.3 Million From Corning Foundation

Corning-Painted Post School District Receives $5.3 Million From Corning Foundation

The Corning-Painted Post Area School District in upstate New York has announced a $5.3 million grant from the Corning Incorporated Foundation, the philanthropic arm of specialty glass and ceramics manufacturer Corning Inc., to help restore cuts made to the district's secondary education curriculum and address a multi-million-dollar funding gap in its 2012-13 budget.

Speaking at a recent school board meeting, C-PP superintendent Michael Ginalski said that the grant will likely save a hundred and twenty district jobs, including fifty-five teaching positions, the Corning Leader reports. Even with the grant, an unanticipated $675,000 in state aid, and $500,000 in reserve funds, C-PP still faces a $5.45 million budget deficit for the coming school year, putting more than ninety-three full-time jobs and a dozen part-time positions at risk.

Since it was established sixty years ago, the Corning Incorporated Foundation has awarded more than $130 million to nonprofit organizations, most of them working to improve the quality of life in and near communities where Corning Inc. operates. The grant to C-PP is the third major grant from the foundation to C-PP since 2010; in 2011 the foundation awarded $4.2 million to the district, while in 2010 it awarded the district a $1.7 million grant.

"The Corning Incorporated Foundation is very pleased to continue working with the Corning-Painted Post School District to ensure that the best possible educational opportunities will be offered to area students without interruption," said the foundation's president, Kristin Swain. "We recognize that the district continues to face a challenging funding environment and that taxpayers face ever-increasing costs. The foundation's grant represents a renewed investment in the future of our children as they prepare to move into today's global economy."
