TI Foundation Partners With Texas Education Groups on STEM Initiative

TI Foundation Partners With Texas Education Groups on STEM Initiative

The Texas Instruments Foundation, Educate Texas, and the Lancaster Independent School District have announced the launch of a four-year, $4.8 million STEM initiative.

With funding provided by the TI Foundation, Educate Texas, a public-private initiative of Dallas-based Communities Foundation of Texas, will work with LISD to implement a plan to transform how science, technology, engineering, and math are taught in schools across the district.

While the initiative, over the long term, aims to prepare students to be STEM-capable and create a highly skilled, internationally competitive workforce for northern Texas, its goals over the next four years will focus on ensuring rigorous, high-quality instruction in math, science, technology, and design.

To that end, the initiative will leverage existing teacher advancement programs to provide structure and the time required for educators to learn, absorb, and apply STEM practices; create industry-informed pathways with opportunities for industry certification in areas such as communications, health sciences, information software system design, and engineering; implement a college- and career-ready curriculum that increases opportunities for accelerated learning options; and establish a robust partnership system to engage higher education, industry, government, community, and external support in the creation of a STEM district and opportunities for students.

"The TI Foundation has a long history of investing to improve STEM education in the north Texas region," said Sam Self, chairman of the foundation's board of directors. "Working with Educate Texas and LISD, we have the opportunity to launch a comprehensive effort focused on STEM across an entire school district. We've set the groundwork in place to do that, and LISD has the commitment of its entire community....We expect the success and outcomes in LISD will serve as a model for replication at other school districts throughout Texas."
