McKnight Foundation Awards $10.1 Million in Grants
The Minneapolis-based McKnight Foundation has announced first-quarter grants totaling more than $10.1 million.
The awards include a total of $300,000 to two organizations working to restore and protect floodplains and wetlands in the ten-state Mississippi River corridor. The Lake Ponchartrain Basin Foundation in Metairie, Louisiana, received a two-year, $220,000 grant in support of its ongoing efforts to develop plans and implement strategies for coastal restoration and storm protection in Louisiana. In addition, the Southwestern Illinois Resource Conservation and Development Council in Mascoutah was awarded $80,000 over two years for conservation efforts along the 195-mile section of the Mississippi River between St. Louis and the confluence of the Ohio River.
"More than fifty cities and eighteen million people rely on the Mississippi River as a source of drinking water, an ecosystem, a transportation corridor, and a community amenity," said McKnight Foundation board chair Ted Staryk. "McKnight is proud to support these two organizations, as well as dozens of others like them, that are deeply engaged in the work of protecting this vital resource."
