Jonas Center Awards $2 Million for Nurse Scholars Program
The New York City-based Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence has announced $2 million in funding in support of nursing doctoral candidates in its Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program.
The 2012 cohort includes 142 Ph.D. and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) candidates representing all fifty states. As part of a new partnership with the Morton K. and Jane Blaustein Foundation and the Hearst Foundations, the Jonas Center also will fund twenty-five DNP scholars to serve as advanced practice nurses in primary care.
The latest group of doctoral candidates to be recognized by the program, which is administered by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, increases to more than two hundred the number of scholars who have been recognized by the program since it was launched in 2008. The $2 million in funding, and an additional $1.5 million raised by participating schools, will support the scholars through 2014.
"We wanted the Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program to dramatically change the landscape of nursing education and, ultimately, the future of nursing and healthcare," said Jonas Center co-founder Donald B. Jonas. "We feel we've made great strides towards the first goal and look forward to the impact these remarkable men and women will have on the health care of future generations."
