NRG Energy Completes Solar Energy Projects in Haiti as Part of Clinton Global Initiative Commitment

NRG Energy Completes Solar Energy Projects in Haiti as Part of Clinton Global Initiative Commitment

NRG Energy has announced that is building or has completed solar power installations at several sites in Haiti's central plateau as part of the company's $1 million commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative.

Built in partnership with the Clinton Foundation and the Solar Electric Light Fund, projects such as a photovoltaic panel system at the Lashto Fish Farm and another at the Bon Berger du Domond School are designed to address the burden of high energy costs in the impoverished country. Other projects, either completed or under development, include solar installations at twenty schools, a drip irrigation system for farming, and micro-enterprise centers that help support small Haitian businesses.

The company's CGI commitment is in addition to the funds it contributed to relief efforts in the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. Other companies donating equipment and/or resources as part of the effort include Droompac, Found Object, JA Solar, OutBack Power, Surrette Battery Company, and Trina Solar.

"NRG's commitment in Haiti's central plateau demonstrates the positive effects solar power installations can have on a community," said former President Bill Clinton. "I am proud that my foundation has partnered with NRG on this project, which works with Haitian schools, farms, and businesses to make a real difference in the lives of Boucan Carré residents in an environmentally friendly manner. I was glad to visit NRG's project sites and see the progress being made, and I look forward to seeing its success continue."
