Carnegie Corporation Announces $900,000 in Grants to Global Nuclear Future Initiative
The Carnegie Corporation of New York, in partnership with the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur and William and Flora Hewlett foundations, has announced grants totaling more than $900,000 in support of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' Global Nuclear Future Initiative.
Grants of $500,000 from Carnegie, $280,000 from MacArthur, and $150,000 from Hewlett will be used to advance the GNF Initiative, which seeks to reduce the likelihood of a terrorist group stealing or acquiring material from a nuclear facility; promote multilateral fuel cycle arrangements for safe civil nuclear energy programs; and strengthen the international nonproliferation treaty regime.
Since the initiative was launched in 2008, the academy has helped convene constituencies in the United States and abroad that historically have not communicated with each other and has supported the development of a global network of scholars and representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations, the League of Arab States, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and various state energy agencies. The project also has produced several volumes dealing with aspects of nuclear energy and conducted policy-oriented work on the physical protection of nuclear facilities and nonproliferation regime and the current state and future prospects of the emerging international nuclear order, with a particular focus on the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
"These philanthropic foundations are helping the American Academy address one of the most complex and pressing global security issues of our time," said American Academy of Arts and Sciences president Leslie C. Berlowitz.
