Stavros Niarchos Foundation Announces Sixteen Grants to Assist Greek Organizations

The Athens-based Stavros Niarchos Foundation has announced grants totaling $12.1 million (€9.2 million) to sixteen organizations working to alleviate the worsening consequences of the ongoing socioeconomic crisis in Greece.

Part of a €100 million initiative previously announced by the foundation, the grants to organizations working in the areas of social welfare, health and medicine, and education underscore the foundation's belief that immediate actions in response to the crisis are essential. The foundation also is spearheading several initiatives as part of this round of grants, including a food aid program for schools intended to assist some three thousand children; the installation of photovoltaic panels on buildings housing nonprofit organizations to help them save energy and reduce their operating expenses; and a program that seeks to help approximately a hundred schools upgrade their information technology infrastructure.

Recipients include Mundo en Armonia, the Social Work Foundation, the Association of Social Responsibility for Children and Youth (SKEP), and the Museum of Greek Children's Art. The foundation also in the process of evaluating a number of additional grants.
