Community Foundation Update (2/11/12) Alabama

The Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County has received a $30,000 grant from the Birmingham-based Daniel Fund, the Huntsville Times reports. The grant will be used to help strengthen local communities.

Florida

The Indian River Community Foundation in Vero Beach has elected Lois Appleby and Andrea Thurn to three-year board terms.

Georgia

According to a recent study (47 pages, PDF) commissioned by the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, two-thirds of some 2,700 residents in the twenty-three county metro Atlanta region made a charitable gift during 2011, half volunteered time, and 36 percent participated in political activities. The survey was designed to establish a baseline to assess the foundation's influence in metro-Atlanta communities and set benchmarks for how involved residents are in community involvement, philanthropic giving, volunteering, and public policy involvement.

Maryland

The Community Foundation for Prince George's County, an affiliate of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, has named William M. Shipp as its new board chair.

Massachusetts

The Boston Foundation has announced a $100,000 "out of the blue" grant to the Institute of Nonprofit Management and Leadership at Boston University to help the institute enhance its training of present and future nonprofit leaders. Founded in 2007, the institute works to educate, support, and connect nonprofit leaders and conducts research and supports a network of practitioners through fellowships, teaching and mentoring opportunities, and access to university resources.

Missouri

The Springfield-based Community Foundation of the Ozarks, in partnership with Commerce Trust Company, has announced grants totaling $127,500 to fourteen regional organizations that work on rural poverty issues across southern Missouri, KSPR reports. Recipients include the Polk County Health Center, Care to Learn, Ozarks Food Harvest, and the Good Samaritan Care Center.

Ohio

The Columbus Foundation has announced that its B.A. Seitz Fund has awarded twelve grants totaling $19,500 to organizations serving Seneca County and that the Robert E. and Genevieve B. Schaefer Fund awarded thirteen grants totaling $96,703 to organizations serving Chillicothe and Ross County. Recipients include the Adena Mansion and Gardens Society, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio, Seneca County Family & Children First, and Camp Fire USA Northwest Ohio Council.

Wisconsin

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has announced that the 2011 holiday season was its strongest "giving season" since 2008. In November and December, the foundation received $3.1 million in gifts, compared to $2.4 million in 2009 and 2010 and $2.1 million in 2008. While giving at the end of the calendar year was constant from the recession through 2010, giving in 2011 increased 48 percent over the 2008 total.
