Hartford Foundation Awards $28 Million in 2011 Grants

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving in Connecticut has announced that during 2011 it awarded more than $28 million in grants to local nonprofits and educational institutions.

More than a third of the total, some $10 million, was awarded to organizations working in the areas of education and economic development, which are the focus of the foundation's new strategic plan, Accelerate Success. The foundation also awarded approximately $6.8 million to nonprofits providing family and social services, $4.8 million to support arts and culture in the region, $4 million to health organizations, and more than $2 million for summer programs and college scholarships.

Since its founding in 1925, the foundation has awarded more than $532 million in grants through more than a thousand funds created by local donors, families, and organizations. In 2011, twenty-four endowed funds were established at the foundation.

"As Connecticut worked to rebuild its economy, the Hartford Foundation continued our decades-long support of Greater Hartford agencies as they carried on the vital work that sustains and enriches our community," said HFPG president Linda J. Kelly. "We can only do our work because of the foresight and generosity of our many donors, who have continued to give even in these difficult economic times."
