Hartford Foundation Awards $700,000 to Combat Homelessness

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving in Hartford, Connecticut, has awarded grants totaling more than $700,000 to three agencies working to provide emergency shelter and services for homeless individuals and families in the region.

Grant recipients include the Salvation Army of Greater Hartford, which was awarded $309,434 for its Marshall House Homeless Prevention Program; My Sisters' Place, which received $220,000 to provide assistance to some 270 individuals in the form of security deposits and rent to families transitioning to permanent housing; and $174,000 to the Immaculate Conception Shelter and Housing Corporation to help house at least twenty additional men a night in its emergency shelter while providing services to as many as sixty others.

According to the foundation, the economy and high unemployment have boosted homelessness across Connecticut. Last year, according to the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness, the state's fifty-two emergency shelters and 2,189 beds served 11,700 people, including 1,500 children.
