BNY Mellon Announces $10.9 Million in Grants

BNY Mellon has announced grants totaling nearly $11 million to nonprofit organizations in Pittsburgh and New York.

Made through the bank's Powering Potential giving program, the grants were awarded to organizations working to provide food, clothing, energy and housing assistance, and job training and skills development. During 2011, BNY Mellon awarded more than $7.2 million to organizations in New York, including more than $1 million to arts and cultural organizations; more than $800,000 in education grants; $650,000 for safety-net programs, including the distribution of more than seventy-four million pounds of food; $500,000 in workforce training grants; and more than $200,000 in support of programs that assist individuals with special needs.

In addition, the bank awarded grants totaling $3.7 million to Pittsburgh-area nonprofits, including $120,000 to Action Housing in support of an intensive case management and affordable housing program for youth who are aging out of the foster care system and facing homelessness; $100,000 to Catholic Charities for its Free Health Care Center's Dental Program, which has a twelve-month waiting list; and $100,000 to United Cerebral Palsy in support of its Assistive Technology Program and its UCP Kids Vocational Ventures Program, which enables career exploration and networking for low-income students with disabilities between the ages of 14 and 18.

"We are committed to strengthening the communities in which our employees live and work, with collaborative, effective charitable programs that deliver financial assistance and harness our employee talent to make a difference for those in need," said James P. McDonald, the bank's global head of philanthropy and employee programs.
