New York Community Trust Announces $5.5 Million in Year-End Grants

The New York Community Trust has announced grants totaling more than $5.5 million to seventy-two organizations working in a range of program areas, including health and human services, housing, employment, education, and the arts.

The final round of awards to be announced by the trust in 2011 brings its total grantmaking for the year to $33 million and includes a $150,000 seed grant to the trust's New York City Veterans Fund to support efforts to coordinate the philanthropic sector's response to the needs of veterans and their families. Other awards include a $50,000 grant to the Urban Justice Center in support of its efforts to provide legal assistance to low-income veterans with mental illness; a $150,000 grant to the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter in support of its efforts to offer overnight shelter, food, and counseling to the homeless; and a $78,000 grant to New York University's Silver School of Social Work to implement a new program designed to help domestic violence survivors build a support network and achieve financial independence.

The organization also awarded $40,000 to the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation in support of its efforts to provide job training, internships, employment, and benefits assistance; $90,000 to the Women's Initiative for Self Employment for a training program that helps disadvantaged young women open new businesses; $175,000 to Kids Orbit to help provide daily literacy instruction to girls in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade; and $200,000 to the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund for a joint program that promotes hands-on learning and critical thinking among adolescents through the use of digital media.
