San Francisco Foundation Awards $5 Million in Safety-Net Grants

San Francisco Foundation Awards $5 Million in Safety-Net Grants

The San Francisco Foundation has announced nearly $5 million in grants to Bay Area nonprofits.

With unemployment in California at 11.7 percent and the number of home foreclosures in the state rising, a growing number of Bay Area residents are turning to nonprofit organizations that provide resources and safety-net services. To help support those nonprofits, the foundation awarded more than $2 million through its Safety Net grant program to fifty-three organizations working to provide food, financial and legal assistance, and support services for low-income and disadvantaged populations, including domestic violence and mental health crisis services. Through its Job Training and Creation program, the foundation awarded nearly $1.5 million to thirty-three organizations working to provide a pathway out of poverty by readying clients for current or future employment, increasing their self-sufficiency, and creating more jobs. And through its Foreclosure Response and Neighborhood Preservation programs, the foundation awarded grants totaling more than $1.4 million to twenty-eight organizations that provide foreclosure counseling, assist with loan modifications, help tenants who are displaced due to foreclosures, and buy, rehabilitate, and resell foreclosed properties.
