Knight Foundation Awards $2.9 Million to South Florida Arts Groups

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced the winners of the 2011 Knight Arts Challenge Miami, a community-wide competition designed to transform South Florida through the arts.

Now in its fourth year, the contest awarded a total of $2.9 million to thirty-one projects with a variety of ambitions, from bringing the arts into people's everyday lives, to telling Miami's unique story and helping to develop a recognizable "Miami" style of dance, to providing young artists and arts enthusiasts with enriching experiences, to attracting Hispanic masters to South Florida through a theater festival, exhibits, and performances at the Cuban Museum.

Since the program was launched in 2008, the competition has been expanded to Detroit, Philadelphia, and San Jose, California. In four years, the Knight Foundation has awarded nearly $19 million to arts challenge projects.

"The Miami of today is not the Miami of ten, five, or even two years ago. Much of that has to do with artists and supporters who are building a new Miami everyday and bringing us together through their work," said Alberto Ibargüen, president and CEO of the Knight Foundation. "Every day, Knight Arts Challenge winners add to that momentum, moving and inspiring us toward a better future."
