Carnegie Corporation Announces Third-Quarter Grants

The Carnegie Corporation of New York has announced forty grants totaling more than $34 million to organizations in the United States and around the world working in a wide range of areas, including international development, education reform, and the arts.

Grants awarded through the foundation's international program include $900,000 over three years to Middleburg College for nuclear nonproliferation education programs at the James L. Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies; $500,000 over three years to the American University of Beirut in support of policy research partnerships and a think-tank consortium; and $300,000 over two years to enable the National Academy of Sciences to engage in a scientific and policy dialogue with Russia about tactical nuclear weapons.

National program grant recipients include the Alliance for Excellent Education in Washington, D.C., which was awarded a two-year, $1.5 million general support grant for its Center for Secondary School Digital Learning and Policy; Oakland-based Envision Schools, which will receive a two-year, $800,000 grant in support of its deeper learning student assessment initiative; and the Philadelphia Youth Network, which was awarded $250,000 in support of its efforts to become a school design and development intermediary.

Carnegie, which is celebrating its hundredth anniversary, also awarded two centennial grants to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, including a $10 million grant over five years to support the endowment's efforts to become a global think tank and a $950,000 grant over three years to strengthen the endowment's development and fundraising capacity. In addition, the foundation awarded two grants totaling $350,000 to National Public Radio and Public Radio International through its special opportunities fund and two leadership awards totaling $1 million to the Miami Dade College Foundation and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Foundation.
