University at Buffalo Receives $40 Million Bequest

The University at Buffalo has announced an anonymous bequest of $40 million from an alumnus.

The largest gift ever made by an individual to the university will support the priorities of the UB medical school, which in the short term include hiring faculty to bolster the growth of medical programs and research in strategic areas. The bequest also will be used to catalyze the development of a new UB medical school in downtown Buffalo.

The donor, who graduated from UB during World War II and had a general medicine practice in a small upstate community, invested for decades with the intention of giving back to the university. "[The gift] opens the door to a future of world-class medical education and health care in our region," said UB president Satish K. Tripathi. "We are grateful to our anonymous alumnus, who in a very dramatic way has shown us the power that private philanthropy has to transform higher education."
