Program Announced for 2011 Clinton Global Initiative

Program Announced for 2011 Clinton Global Initiative

The Clinton Global Initiative has announced that its seventh annual meeting, to be held September 20-22, will focus on three major global challenges: generating employment for the twenty-first century; increasing sustainable consumption; and empowering girls and women.

Building on the work of CGI America, an event held two months ago to help spur job creation and drive economic growth, the 2011 CGI program will highlight effective workforce training programs, showcase innovative government incentives that catalyze inclusive job growth, and examine market-leading business developments that can sustainably increase profits, productivity, and prosperity around the world. It also will explore how, by redefining consumption, organizations can respond faster to impending resource constraints and instability, while ensuring economic growth; take a deeper look at what is working in girls' and women's empowerment and highlight areas where more resources could make a significant impact; and address through special sessions critical issues in the Middle East and North Africa and the role architecture, sports, and the arts play in fostering positive change.

This year's program will bring together an estimated 1,200 current and former heads of state, public and private sector CEOs, government officials, and other leaders, including President Obama, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Inter-American Development Bank president Luis Alberto Moreno, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair, Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus, CARE USA president and CEO Helene D. Gayle, and PepsiCo chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi.

"Since we began in 2005, CGI members have made great progress in addressing critical global issues, by making more than 2,000 commitments through CGI that have and will improve the lives of more than 300 million people in more than 180 countries," said former President Clinton. "As many of these commitments come to fruition, I am proud that we will be showcasing the tangible impact they have made."
