Richard King Mellon Foundation Awards $4 Million to Duquesne University

Duquesne University in Pittsburgh has received a $4 million grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to update science labs and help fund science-related projects at the university, the Duquesne Duke reports.

The grant will support renovations in the schools of pharmacy and natural and environmental sciences, including a new simulation program for pharmaceutical students and the relocation of the physics department and anatomy and physiology labs. In its 2010-14 capital plan, the university indicated that it planned to spend nearly $12.4 million on six science-related projects.

Although the grant does not support new lab technology, Alan Seadler, director of the university's Center for Biotechnology, said the funds will enable the university to pursue additional grants. "We need really good, up-to-date laboratories to have faculty able to do cutting-edge research so we can get grants to use for cutting-edge technology," Seadler said.
