PBS Hawaii Receives $5 Million Grant From Ching Foundation
PBS Hawaii, the state's only public television station, has announced a $5 million grant from the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation to build a new home for its operations.
The grant, which pushes PBS Hawaii past the midway point in its $30 million capital campaign, will be used to renovate and expand an existing one-story building along the Nimitz Highway in Honolulu. The site, purchased in January 2009, formerly housed television station KFVE. For more than forty years, PBS Hawaii has called the University of Hawai'i at Manoa home, but it is losing its lease there as the university's own office and classroom space needs grow. Scheduled to be completed in 2014, the organization's new home will be named the Clarence T.C. Ching Campus.
"The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation wants to see public television survive and thrive for the sake of future generations of Islanders," said Ching Foundation trustee Kenneth Okamoto. "PBS Hawaii is making an indelible difference in the lives of thousands of young people through its innovative program, HIKI NO: The Nation's First Statewide Student News Network."
