Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles Receives $3.4 Million Bequest
The Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles has announced a $3.4 million gift from the estate of Raymond J. Kornfeld and his wife, Shirley.
The gift will establish the Raymond and Shirley Kornfeld Endowment Fund, which will support educational and medical causes. The fund joins several other endowments established at the foundation in recent years, including the Mickey and Irene Ross Endowment, which was created last year with a $11 million bequest from comedy writer Mickey Ross.
Born in Montana 1914, Kornfeld worked as a certified public accountant in Los Angeles County for sixty years, after earning his bachelor's degree at the University of Montana and studying at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander in the South Pacific. During their lifetimes, he and and his wife supported numerous philanthropic and educational institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, the Jewish Free Loan Association, and the New York City-based Henry George School of Social Science.
"The Kornfelds were both caring individuals who strongly believed in the power of education and good health care and chose to leave an enduring legacy for future generations," said JCFLA president and CEO Marvin I. Schotland. "We are gratified they selected the foundation to administer their philanthropic directives. This substantial bequest underscores the confidence our donors and their professional advisors place in the foundation as knowledgeable, responsible stewards of charitable assets."
