California Community Foundation Awards $5.6 Million in Grants

California Community Foundation Awards $5.6 Million in Grants

The California Community Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $5.6 million to sixty-two nonprofit organizations serving low-income communities in Los Angeles County.

The majority of grants will support nonprofits working in the foundation's primary areas of interest, including affordable housing, art, education, health care, and human development — with more than half designated for general operating support and the remainder for new initiatives. CCF also announced grants for civic engagement, discretionary scholarships, and those made through its El Monte Community Building Initiative.

Recipients included Compton Jr. Posse, which was awarded $100,000 in general support to continue providing equine-based activities for low-income youth; Tia Chuca's Centro Cultural, which received $57,000 to provide multidisciplinary arts workshops and programming in the northeastern San Fernando Valley; and the YMCA of Greater Long Beach, which was awarded a two-year, $108,000 grant to advocate for greater access to secondary and postsecondary educational resources for immigrants. In addition, the foundation awarded a two-year, $205,000 grant to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for medical research that advances the prevention, cure, and treatment of blood cancer affecting Hispanic children in Los Angeles County.

"There is no more important time than now and no more important place than Los Angeles to support nonprofit organizations, an under-appreciated segment of our community that is increasingly pressed to provide services and programs not available elsewhere," said CCF president and CEO Antonia Hernandez. "Supporting nonprofits has always been part of [our mission], and will remain so."
