Community Foundation Update (7/23/11)

California

The Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County has announced grants totaling $944,100 to sixty-two nonprofit organizations, including $50,000 to Community Bridges for its Meals on Wheels program and three family resource centers; $20,000 to Save Our Shores to continue protecting and promoting the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary; and $15,000 to the YWCA of Watsonville for youth development and pregnancy prevention programs.

The Los Angeles-based California Community Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2011 Fellowship for Visual Artists program. Twenty fellows will receive grants ranging from $15,000 to $20,000 as well as professional development opportunities.

Louisiana

The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced grants totaling $1.1 million to six nonprofit organizations working to assist community members still recovering from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster. The grants include $220,000 to the Plaquemines Community C.A.R.E. Centers Foundation to respond to the behavioral health needs of children and adults in the region and $121,000 to Coastal Communities Consulting to provide support for commercial fishers, rural entrepreneurs, and local families.

Massachusetts

The New Bedford-based Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts has announced Peter C. Bogle as its new board chair and appointed Carole A. Fiola, Gerry Kavanaugh, Joan Menard, and Leonard W. Sullivan to its board of directors.

Michigan

The Community Foundation for Muskegon County has announced that it will award a total of $3,000 in mini-grants to six community members, organizations, or businesses through its Love Your Community competition on Facebook, the Muskegon Chronicle reports.

North Carolina

The Raleigh-based North Carolina Community Foundation has announced that two affiliates — the Wake County and Johnston County community foundations — have distributed a total of $14,649 in grants through its Disaster Relief Fund, which is designed to support programs assisting communities affected by April's tornadoes and storms.

Pennsylvania

The Erie Community Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $2.2 million to 239 nonprofit organizations, including $15,000 to the Corry Industrial Benefit Association for a blight removal project; $11,000 to the Fairview Presbyterian Church to expand its community center; and $7,500 to Community of Caring to provide financial literacy training.

Vermont

The Middlebury-based Vermont Community Foundation has announced a three-year, $104,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of the Knight Community Information Challenge, in support of the nonprofit news Web site VTDigger.org. The grant will be matched by the foundation and used by VTDigger.org to hire a full-time investigative reporter to cover healthcare and energy issues in the state.
