St. Baldrick's Foundation Awards $19.6 Million for Childhood Cancer Research

St. Baldrick's Foundation Awards $19.6 Million for Childhood Cancer Research

The St. Baldrick's Foundation in Monrovia, California, has announced grants totaling $19.6 million to support pediatric oncology research.

In addition to research grants, fellowships, and gap funding for scholars, this year a new category of three- to five-year consortium grants were awarded to help researchers from multiple institutions study the causes and effects of specific diseases and develop innovative treatments for childhood cancers. Recipients of the grants, which are managed by the lead institutions on behalf of all member institutions, include the Children's Oncology Group in Arcadia, California; New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy at Children's Hospital Los Angeles; and the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium at the University of Utah School of Medicine and National Marrow Donor Program in Minneapolis.

"These 'group science' projects are some of the most exciting grants I've seen," said Jeffrey M. Lipton, chairman of the foundation's Scientific Advisory Task Force and director of pediatric hematology/oncology and stem cell transplantation at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center. "The ability to bring scientists of diverse expertise together to solve important problems will unquestionably accelerate the path to cure and prevention of pediatric cancer. This is a great thing for children with cancer."

The recent grants bring the total funds awarded by the foundation in the current fiscal year to $21 million, a record. For a complete list of grant recipients, visit the St. Baldrick's Foundation Web site.
