Caterpillar Foundation, Clinton Bush Haiti Fund Award $3 Million for Home Repair in Haiti
The Pan American Development Foundation has announced grants totaling almost $3 million from the Caterpillar Foundation and Clinton Bush Haiti Fund to boost repair of multifamily homes in Leogane, the epicenter of last year's devastating earthquake in Haiti.
PADF, which has led similar efforts in the country's capital, Port-au-Prince, will manage the project in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works. Over the next three months, the partners plan to repair eight hundred damaged structures, allowing more than seven thousand Haitians to return to their homes. The project also seeks to create more than two hundred local jobs by hiring and training engineers, masons, subcontractors, and other workers — including graduates of the YouthBuild/IDEGEN Academy, a vocational training center for at-risk youth established by the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.
By focusing on moderately damaged homes that can be repaired relatively easily, the initiative aims to get Haitians out of tent camps and back into permanent residences as quickly as possible.
"PADF's partnership with the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Caterpillar will further strengthen our efforts to collaborate with the newly elected Haitian government in its efforts to provide safer and more secure housing for the many Haitians who are still homeless," said PADF executive director John Sanbrailo. "[The project will] also provid[e] a model for accelerating the country's reconstruction process for the neediest population."
