Bush Foundation Announces 2011 Fellows

The Bush Foundation in St. Paul, Minnesota, has announced the recipients of its 2011 Fellowship Program.

Eighteen fellows from Minnesota and North Dakota, representing the first cohort under the foundation's redesigned fellowship program, will receive grants ranging from $25,000 to $75,000 over two years to tackle a specific social or economic problem in their communities. Projects in which they will be engaged include working to preserve the culture and identity of the Hmong people and Native Americans; improve educational outcomes for Latino youth and access to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) resources; and help provide quality health care to the rural elderly, urban poor, and GLBT youth of color.

"Since 1965, Bush Fellows have been creating great impact in their communities," said Bush Foundation vice president Pamela Wheelock. "These newest Bush Fellows will continue that legacy of impact as they focus on one particular tough issue in one particular community. They carry forward the mission of the foundation — to be a catalyst for the courageous leadership necessary to find sustainable solutions to tough public problems and ensure community vitality — in a way that is very on-the-ground and, for them, very personal."
