Community Foundation Update (6/25/11)

The Community Foundation of Broward has announced that it is moving to a larger facility in Fort Lauderdale. The move is expected to enable the foundation to help address pressing issues in the area and expand its training and education capacities.

Following a strategic planning effort, the Chicago Community Trust has announced a new set of funding priorities and guidelines.

The Cape Cod Foundation has announced more than a hundred scholarships totaling over $310,000. Nearly seventy scholarship funds have been established at the foundation in its twenty-two-year history.

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced that Susan T. Mosey, president of Midtown Detroit, has been awarded the inaugural Mariam C. Noland Award for Nonprofit Leadership. Named after the foundation's first and current president, the newly created annual award recognizes a nonprofit president or CEO in southeast Michigan whose service exemplifies the importance of nonprofit leadership to his or her organization as well as the wider nonprofit community.

The Brooklyn Community Foundation has announced the release of its first annual grants report, Do Good Right Here (8 pages, PDF). Among other things, the report highlights some of the organizations to which the foundation awarded grants during its first year of grantmaking.

The Greater Cincinnati Foundation has announced that its Weathering the Economic Storm fund recently awarded $70,000 to help area nonprofits with unforeseen needs. Grants were awarded to Caracole, the City Gospel Mission, Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates, and the Safety Net Alliance.

The Portland-based Oregon Community Foundation has announced the creation of the Gregory A. Chaillé Public Service Scholarship Fund, which will provide graduate level scholarships to Oregon residents who are pursuing a career in public service. The first recipient of the $5,000 scholarship is Johnell Bell, who is enrolled in the Executive Masters of Public Administration Program at Portland State University.

YOUTHadelphia, the Youth in Philanthropy committee of the Philadelphia Foundation's Fund for Children, has announced grants totaling $125,000 for thirteen projects that will address youth issues the committee identified as the city's most pressing: service and advocacy for homeless teens; substance abuse prevention and treatment; pregnancy services; and college and vocational preparation.
