Knight Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York Award $3.9 Million to Expand Innovative Journalism Program

Knight Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York Award $3.9 Million to Expand Innovative Journalism Program

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York have announced $3.9 million in new support to expand an effort to help journalism schools and mass communications programs reinvent themselves for the digital age.

The additional support for the program follows on the heels of an independent evaluation which found that the Carnegie-Knight initiative had already contributed to the transformation of curricula at leading journalism schools and was instrumental in helping j-school graduates find work at a time of economic uncertainty and industry transition.

The new funding will be used to open the News21 project to journalism schools nationwide; promote curriculum changes in graduate journalism education; and launch News21 spin-off projects at five universities, including UC Berkeley, the University of Southern California, Northwestern, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Columbia.

"The initiative has developed a new cohort of well-educated journalists who are analytical thinkers and adept communicators, as at home in the virtual universe as they are in the day-to-day world of what has become a news cycle that knows no global borders and never sleeps," said Carnegie Corporation president Vartan Gregorian. "Yet of even greater importance, this investment has fortified journalism's role as a pillar of democracy."
