Alcoa Foundation Announces $4 Million Initiative for Environmental Research
The Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Foundation has announced the launch of a two-year, $4 million initiative to support ten global sustainability research projects.
Researchers from fifteen universities and nongovernmental organizations around the world will participate in the initiative, Advancing Sustainability Research: Innovative Partnerships for Actionable Solutions, investigating issues in natural resource management, materials science and engineering, sustainable design, energy, and environmental economics. Scheduled to be completed by 2013, the research will be published online, shared with the sustainability community, and discussed among stakeholders.
Managed by Alcoa and administered by the Institute of International Education, the initiative will include Ohio State University's Institute for Materials Research (lightweight vehicle structures), the University of São Paulo in Brazil (mangrove conservation), and the Interuniversity Research Centre for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes, and Services (CIRAIG) in Montréal (life cycle assessment).
"Alcoa strives to address environmental issues within our operations, across our industry and within our communities," said Alcoa Foundation president Paula Davis. "This research will be used as a tool to rally communities and thought leaders into action....Our vision is that the results of the Advancing Sustainability Research initiative will lead to widespread adoption of best practices in areas such as water management, energy production, and carbon emissions that are critical to conservation."
