National Math and Science Initiative, AP Strategies Partner to Boost Student Achievement

National Math and Science Initiative, AP Strategies Partner to Boost Student Achievement

The National Math and Science Initiative and Advanced Placement Strategies, both headquartered in Dallas, have announced the launch of a new partnership designed to expand AP math and science programs in Texas schools.

In conjunction with the launch, three schools — Lockhart High School, Haltom High School, and R.L. Turner High School — will receive five-year grants totaling $1.3 million to implement the Advanced Placement Training and Initiative Program. Selected through a competitive grant process, the participating schools are located in a community that has been affected by a major road project and join sixty-one other schools across fifteen districts in the state enrolled in the program.

With support from a consortium of transportation infrastructure companies, AP Strategies will help the schools implement the program in August. Once launched, the program will combine teacher training, open enrollment, preparatory classes for students, and financial incentives for teachers and students to boost student achievement.

"This unprecedented financial commitment from the transportation infrastructure development industry represents a significant, long-term investment in the future of our state's workforce," said Tom Luce, CEO of NMSI and former U.S. assistant secretary of education. "In today's global, high-tech economy, proficiency in math and science are essential: Eight of ten jobs of the future will require a background in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)."
