Community Foundation Update (5/21/11) Alabama

The Anniston-based Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama has announced the creation of a Tornado Recovery Fund and that it will award $20,000 in emergency grant assistance to local agencies for long-term recovery efforts in the region.

The musical group Alabama has announced that it will spearhead Bama Rising: A Benefit Concert for Alabama Tornado Recovery, which will direct gifts and event proceeds to a long-term recovery fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. Artists schedule to appear at the June 14 concert include Alabama, Sheryl Crow, Sara Evans, Brad Paisley, and Darius Rucker. Decisions about how to distribute Bama Rising concert proceeds and gifts to the Bama Rising Fund will be made by an advisory committee that includes representatives of the artists, promoters, and foundation.

Connecticut

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced a $400,000 grant to support the iQuilt project, which aims to connect downtown Hartford's key cultural sites and institutions with pedestrian and bicycling routes and promote economic growth and redevelopment of the capital district. The iQuilt area would be a half-mile square bounded by Buckingham/Charter Oak Avenue, I-84, the Connecticut River, and the capitol building. The major cultural institutions in the area are within a fifteen-minute walk of each other.

Florida

The Indian River Community Foundation in Vero Beach has elected Ben F. Bailey III to serve a three-year term on its board, the Treasure Coast Palm reports.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has announced that eleven high school seniors who took part in the Ringling College Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series were selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the foundation. The students were invited to submit a five-hundred-word essay about their experience meeting several notable authors, including Elie Wiesel, Malcolm Gladwell, and Tony Blair.

Indiana

The Terre Haute-based Wabash Valley Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling $29,210 to nine organizations, the Tribune-Star reports. Recipients include the Wabash Valley CHIP (Coronary Health Improvement Project), Freebirds Solution Center, and the Terre Haute Children's Museum.
