Northwest Area Foundation Awards $1.8 Million for Poverty Reduction

Northwest Area Foundation Awards $1.8 Million for Poverty Reduction

The St. Paul-based Northwest Area Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $1.8 million to organizations working to reduce poverty through programs that increase wealth among people with low incomes, influence public policy, and provide leadership training.

Grant recipients include the Corporation for Enterprise Development in Washington, D.C., which was awarded $250,000 for a project to develop businesses in the foundation's service area; AccountAbility Minnesota, which received $125,000 to help low-income families collect unclaimed tax credits; Native Americans in Philanthropy, a Minneapolis-based organization that received $100,000 on behalf of the Native Youth Leadership Alliance to support a program that teaches leadership skills to students interested in economic development in their communities; and Mountain States Group, which was awarded $100,000 to research the development of tax and budgetary policy that focuses on the interests and needs of low- and moderate-income families.

"The best path out of poverty is to increase household income, so families can get beyond the paycheck-to-paycheck struggle and start building long-term assets," said NWAF president and CEO Kevin Walker. "We are investing in programs to create living wage jobs, increase financial security, support small businesses, and improve policies that are barriers to prosperity."

“$1.83 Million Northwest Area Foundation Grants Bolster Green Jobs, Native Leadership, Asset Building, and Public Policy Work.” Northwest Area Foundation Press Release 5/11/11.
