People in the News (5/15/11): Appointments and Promotions

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced the appointments of IRVIN SCOTT as deputy director for effective teaching in the College Ready strategy of its education division and JEREMY HILLMAN as director of external communications. Currently serving as chief academic officer for Boston Public Schools, Scott will lead a portfolio of work focused on supporting teachers and ensuring that their voices inform the education reform dialogue. Hillman, a veteran journalist with the British Broadcasting Corporation, will lead the foundation's global external communications team.

The J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles has announced JAMES CUNO as president and CEO. Cuno, an internationally recognized museum leader and scholar as well as a leader in the field of the visual arts, most recently was president of the Art Institute of Chicago. Earlier he was director of and a professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London; the Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot director of the Harvard University Art Museums as well as a professor of the history of art and architecture at Harvard; director of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College; director of the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at UCLA; and assistant professor of art at Vassar College.

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation in Menlo Park, California, has announced the appointments of ELIZABETH PETERS as general counsel and ERIN ROGERS as an environment program officer. Peters, who joined the foundation in October 2010 as assistant general counsel, previously served as an associate with the D.C. law firm Caplin & Drysdale, where her practice focused on tax-exempt organizations, international tax law, and corporate law. Rogers comes from the Union of Concerned Scientists, where most recently she was manager of Western states climate and energy work and earlier served as outreach manager for climate, energy, and vehicle programs.

In other news, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has announced DEJUAN J. WOODS as associate program officer on its Pathways Out of Poverty grantmaking team. Woods is responsible for Mott's microenterprise portfolio, which supports organizations that encourage small business development among low-income Americans, as well as other poverty-related grantmaking at the foundation. Since 2009, he has served as associate director of development for the College of Engineering at Michigan State University.
