Pew Charitable Trusts Awards $7.1 Million to Philadelphia Organizations

Pew Charitable Trusts Awards $7.1 Million to Philadelphia Organizations

The Pew Charitable Trusts has announced forty-five grants totaling more than $7.1 million to Philadelphia-area nonprofits that serve some of the region's most vulnerable adults.

To be distributed over the next three years, the grants include eleven awards to organizations working to help low-income individuals with limited education obtain and keep competitive employment; eleven to nonprofits that aim to improve behavioral health outcomes for at-risk populations; and twenty-three to organizations working to increase the independence of adults with complex needs, and expand the availability of proven treatment approaches for persons with serious mental illness or substance abuse problems.

Grant recipients include the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross, which was awarded $200,000 for continued support of its Nurse Assistant Training Program; the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, which received $150,000 in support of its Roots to Reentry job training and placement program; ActionAIDS, which was awarded $210,000 to continue providing behavioral health services for individuals with HIV/AIDS; the Bethesda Project, which received almost $250,000 to provide services for chronically homeless individuals; and VNA Community Services, which was awarded $175,000 to assist low-income adults in obtaining support from public programs.

"More than ever, these times call for strategic, nimble organizations that are committed to high-quality services for those who require extra support," said Pew Fund director Frazierita Klasen. "The Philadelphia region is fortunate to have so many organizations that are up to the task of addressing today's needs, many of them offering creative approaches to long-standing problems."
