Stand Up To Cancer Awards $9.74 Million for Experimental Cancer Research

Stand Up To Cancer Awards $9.74 Million for Experimental Cancer Research

Stand Up To Cancer, an initiative of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, has announced grants totaling $9.74 million to thirteen young scientists working on high-risk, high-reward cancer research.

Awarded through SU2C's Innovative Research Grants program, the three-year grants of up to $750,000 will fund projects based on new ideas and approaches that aim to solve critical problems in cancer research. The projects are considered "high-risk" because they support research that is still unproven and often challenges existing paradigms but if successful could result in new life-saving cancer treatments.

This year's recipients were selected from a wide range of disciplines and institutions by the Innovative Research Grants Committee and SU2C's Scientific Advisory Committee, both of which were assembled by the American Association for Cancer Research. The two committees will continue to provide scientific oversight of the projects over the three-year term of the grants.

"The array of novel approaches that these investigators are utilizing to attack cancer is extraordinary," said Dr. William G. Nelson, vice chair of the Innovative Research Grants Committee. "We have cell biologists looking at cancer metabolism and new ways to disrupt how cancer cells obtain nutrients to grow, and a computer scientist analyzing data to predict how a tumor will respond to a drug before it's given to a patient. In this era of interdisciplinary cancer research, these cutting-edge approaches have enormous potential for rapid improvements in patient care."
