Yale Alumnus Donates $50 Million to School of Engineering

Yale Alumnus Donates $50 Million to School of Engineering

Yale University has announced a $50 million gift from Liberty Media chairman John C. Malone to the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) to endow ten new professorships.

The largest gift in SEAS history will endow professorships in the Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science departments, as well as two joint appointments with the Yale School of Management, enabling curricular initiatives that connect engineering and business. According to Yale dean of engineering faculty T. Kyle Vanderlick, the gift will support programs that underpin a growing emphasis on interdisciplinary research, including biomolecular engineering and biodesign; energy and sustainability; imaging, sensing, and networked systems; and surface and interfacial engineering.

Malone, a longtime supporter of Yale's engineering program, previously funded construction of the Daniel L. Malone Engineering Center, which houses the university's department of biomedical engineering.

"We are deeply grateful to John Malone for this transformational gift to Yale Engineering," said Yale University president Richard C. Levin. "These resources will provide for a substantial expansion of our faculty and give momentum to the continuing renaissance of our engineering programs at a time when the advance of technology and the education of engineers is so vitally important to our nation's future."
