People in the News (3/27/11): Appointments and Promotions

The New York City-based Wallace Foundation has announced the appointment of WILLIAM I. MILLER, a business leader and philanthropist, as president, effective July 1. Miller, currently chair of private investment firm Irwin Management in Columbus, Indiana, also serves on the boards of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Yale University. He is a past board chair of Public Radio International, a founding member of the Community Education Coalition of Columbus, and served as a co-chair of the Central Indiana Partnership and as chair of the Columbus Indiana Economic Development Board. He will succeed M. Christine DeVita, who announced her plans to retire last summer.

The Los Angeles-based California Endowment has announced the appointments of TAMU F. JONES and JENNIFER L. CHHEANG as program managers for its Building Healthy Communities program. Jones, who has twelve years of experience in healthcare philanthropy and public health program management, will serve as a program manager for the South Los Angeles BHC site. Chheang, an experienced grantmaker who was most recently a senior program officer in the Planning, Development & Policy Department of First 5 LA, will serve as a program manager for the endowment's Long Beach BHC site.

The Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington, D.C., has announced that former Michigan governor JENNIFER M. GRANHOLM will serve as a senior advisor to its efforts to promote clean energy policies. In her new role, Gov. Granholm will travel the country to demonstrate the economic opportunities of making cars cleaner, industry more efficient, and renewable energy more accessible and affordable.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has announced the appointment of NITIN KOTAK as vice president and CFO. Kotak, most recently CFO and treasurer at Bethesda-based Technest Holdings, started his career in India working at Tinplate Company of India, ITC Limited, and India-based Mattel Toys. In 2003, Kotak moved to the United States to become director of finance and accounting for Able Laboratories, Inc., and was promoted to vice president a year later. He succeeds Edward J. Palmerino, who has held the post since 2006 and will remain with the institute through April 30, 2011.

In other news, the D.C.- based United Nations Foundation has announced the appointment of GINA REISS-WILCHINS as director of its Girl Up campaign. Reiss-Wilchins, who has over twenty years of experience in advocacy and nonprofit work, most recently was executive director of TrueChild. Earlier, she served as managing director of the Gender Public Advocacy Coalition, growing it from a small group of volunteers in New York City to a national organization with a budget of almost $2 million. She also served as Action Vice-President of NOW/NJ and as a founding member of the Equality Federation.
