University of Texas Health Science Center Receives $3.7 Million From Dell Foundation

University of Texas Health Science Center Receives $3.7 Million From Dell Foundation

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston has announced a four-year, $3.7 million grant from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to support childhood obesity research and prevention.

The grant will enable the center to expand or launch a range of initiatives, including a communications core, its community advisory board, and a core for data analysis, and will also support the center's core research program, Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH), a school-based childhood obesity prevention program that has been adopted by more than 7,000 schools in the United States, including 1,600 elementary schools in Texas. In addition, grant funds will be used to support training programs for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the University of Texas School of Public Health, including efforts to utilize data from research projects across the country to develop and influence policy and public health practice in Texas.

"Childhood obesity is one of the most challenging public health issues facing the nation and rates of child obesity are especially high in Texas," said University of Texas Science Center director Dr. Deanna Hoelscher. "With this funding, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation expands its commitment to building the science base and community capacity for effective prevention programs in order to achieve a vision of 'healthy children in a healthy world'."
