Orange County Community Foundation Gave $22.4 Million in 2010

The Orange County Community Foundation in Newport Beach, California, has announced that it awarded $22.4 million in grants and scholarships during 2010, the largest one-year total in its twenty-one-year history and a $1 million increase over its 2009 total.

The grants included $655,000 from the foundation's ReachOut OC initiative, which is designed to support local nonprofits working to provide food, shelter, job training, medical care, and counseling to economically struggling families.

Since its creation in 1989, the foundation has worked with donors to deliver more than $166 million in grants and scholarships, with more than $100 million of that awarded in the last five years.

"With continued increases in demand for services and declining contributions, 2010 has presented many challenges for the local nonprofit sector," said OCCF president Shelley Hoss. "Despite obvious challenges, we remain optimistic about the long-term health of Orange County's nonprofit sector. Leaders of local nonprofits and generous donors have stepped up to meet burgeoning needs with fewer resources. The result is a leaner, stronger and more efficient nonprofit sector, which ultimately benefits our community."
