U.S. Fund for UNICEF Receives Additional $1.25 Million From UPS Foundation

U.S. Fund for UNICEF Receives Additional $1.25 Million From UPS Foundation

The U.S. Fund for UNICEF has announced a two-year, $1.25 million commitment from the UPS Foundation, bringing the foundation's total support for UNICEF in 2010 and 2011 to $2 million, including $400,000 in cash and in-kind support for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

The grant will be used to establish an urgent humanitarian response fund that enables UNICEF to mobilize resources anywhere in the world and will also support field warehouse management and inventory training in several African countries as well as projects aimed at building the capacity of UNICEF and its national counterparts.

Over the past ten years, UPS has supported UNICEF's work in the areas of child protection, girls' education, and emergency preparedness and relief efforts. Following January's devastating earthquake in Haiti, more than a hundred UPS and UNICEF volunteers packed and transported individual child protection kits for fifty thousand displaced children. More recently, UPS and UNICEF teamed up to transport relief supplies to refugees in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, who were displaced by civil unrest there.

"UNICEF is proud to count UPS as one of our key partners in support of our mission to save the lives of children worldwide," said U.S. Fund for UNICEF president and CEO Caryl Stern. "UPS has demonstrated time and again that it places a high priority on strengthening communities in ways that work, whether that is through the implementation of innovative programs, volunteerism, or community grants. This partnership is the perfect marriage of experience and resources that will allow us to fortify systems that help communities in crisis bounce back."

“The UPS Foundation Awards UNICEF $2 Million in Financial and In-Kind Services Through 2011.” United States Fund for UNICEF Press Release 8/31/10.
