Neighborhood Services Organization Receives $1.25 Million From Kresge Foundation
The Kresge Foundation in Troy, Michigan, has awarded a $1.25 million grant to the Neighborhood Services Organization to support the construction of a homeless shelter in Detroit, Crain's Detroit Business reports.
The grant will be used to purchase the former Michigan Bell Telephone Company building from Focus: Hope and convert it into more than a hundred and fifty apartments. NSO will begin renovation work on the building this fall and hopes to complete the $45 million project by the spring of 2012.
In support of the project, NSO also received conditional low-income housing tax credits of more than $15 million from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and other types of funding from the Corporation for Supportive Housing, Wayne County, the Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Michigan Interfaith Trust Fund, and the Detroit Investment Fund.
"The renovation is expected to not only help the homeless," said NSO president and CEO Sheilah Clay, "but also have a positive impact on the surrounding community."
