Lumina Foundation Announces $9.8 Million in Second-Quarter Grants

Lumina Foundation Announces $9.8 Million in Second-Quarter Grants

The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation for Education has announced second-quarter grants totaling $9.8 million to organizations in nine states and the District of Columbia.

The grants will support efforts to prepare students academically, financially, and socially for success beyond high school; improve college completion rates; and increase higher education productivity and capacity to serve more students. Grantees include Washington, D.C.-based HCM Strategists, which was awarded more than $2.8 million to manage state contracts and coordinate technical support for Lumina's productivity initiative; the San Francisco-based Tides Center, which received more than $2.2 million to continue Lumina's multi-state, multiyear Productivity Grant initiative; and the Chicago-based Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, which was awarded $1 million to implement a pilot for a virtual Prior Learning Assessment Center.

The foundation also awarded $474,500 to Learn More Indiana to help the state's students access and complete postsecondary education, $224,700 to the Los Angeles-based Southern California College Access Network to execute Phase II of its KnowHow2GO campaign, and $100,000 to the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance to improve the effectiveness of grantmaking statewide.

"We continuously invest in partners and ideas that will lead us to the Big Goal," said Lumina Foundation president and CEO Jamie Merisotis. "We know it presents an immense challenge — one that requires significant changes in the nation's postsecondary system. We are convinced that we can achieve that progress if we work toward it in a thoughtful, coordinated, and collaborative way."
