Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Announces 2011 Clinical Scholars

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Announces 2011 Clinical Scholars

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has announced the names of twenty-seven young physicians selected as 2011 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars.

Selected from among applicants enrolled in medical and surgical residencies across the country, the latest class of clinical scholars will receive at least $59,500 a year for two years to conduct innovative research and work with communities, organizations, practitioners, and policy makers on issues important to the health of all Americans. Starting in July 2011, the scholars will examine the delivery, impact, and organization of health care in America, with a focus on the mitigation of disparities in the care of hospitalized children, the use of technology to improve doctor-patient communication, improving end-of-life care, reducing hospital-based infections, reducing preterm births for at-risk women, and expanding access to primary care in underserved communities.

Clinical scholars receive their training at one of four partner institutions: Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan, or the University of California, Los Angeles. A program partner for more than thirty years, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs will support eight of the scholars through VA Medical Centers affiliated with the participating universities.

"The Clinical Scholars program is one of RWJF's flagship programs and is among the oldest and most prestigious fellowships awarded to physicians," said David M. Krol, Human Capital Portfolio team director at RWJF and an alumnus of the program. "Clinical Scholars have paved the way for physicians who want to take a leadership role in improving health and health care in the U.S."
